give a little —or give a lot,
olio is hosting this crowdfunding initiative to support 250 families in Maringanha, Cabo Delgado who have been displaced by violence. The conflict in northern Mozambique has touched our team deeply. We hope to bring a little relief, in the form of food and hygiene baskets, over the holidays to our neighbors. Saide & Bachir will be organizing a local distribution to these newcomers, who are now part of our community.
If you live in Cabo Delgado and would like to support or donate in person please contact us on instagram at @olio.land
A Story of Return
July 2021
This photo was taken a few days after Luis Fernando swam from his fishing boat to shore, afraid of vessels approaching in the night. By morning, his boat had overturned in the water, visible from our Pemba studio in Maringanha.
Luis’s story began more than 3,000 km away in Maputo. After independence, he worked in the military, traveling north, and later held various jobs, including as a chef in a sunflower factory, before eventually settling as a fisherman in Macomia. Like the families we are helping today, he was displaced to Maringanha to live with nothing, but the kindness of strangers. During is displacement, Luis lost his phone, documents, and all contact with his family. We discovered he was from the same neighborhood as Salimo, who had been working with us briefly and was preparing to return to Maputo.
Salimo and Luis traveled back together. In Maputo, Luis was reunited with his family.
