Cabo Delgado

Humanitarian

In conflict-affected Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, our work evolved from immediate humanitarian response to long-term resilience and peacebuilding. Together, these efforts reflect a holistic approach; connecting emergency response, peacebuilding, and sustainability — to help the people of Cabo Delgado rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

With the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), we coordinated a €600,000 emergency shelter and mobile cash assistance program that supported more than 2,400 displaced families. A key milestone was the Shelter Improvement Pilot in Mueda’s largest relocation site, which reached 92% of residents and transferred USD 156 to 2,216 families. By promoting the use of local bamboo and timber, the project encouraged sustainable home reconstruction and reduced environmental impact. Special measures ensured inclusion of vulnerable groups such as unaccompanied minors, the elderly, people with disabilities, and pregnant women. Continuous engagement through community sensitization sessions, local focal points, and focus group discussions fostered trust, transparency, and local ownership.

With WeWorld-GVC, the focus expanded from emergency aid to peacebuilding and resilience. We facilitated dialogue between government institutions, civil society, and communities to rebuild trust and cooperation in conflict-affected areas. Through conflict-sensitive approaches and livelihood-strengthening initiatives, we promoted local ownership and supported communities in transitioning from crisis to recovery.
